We used to work together at MathSoft in Cambridge years ago. I was in sales and Boris was my secret weapon engineer that I brought with me to close some big deals down south.
Naturally we had some free time that week to explore the area, specifically in Oklahoma. And so I asked Boris, what are you interested in doing? I didn’t really know him that well since I was on the sales side of the house, but his reply made me realize this guy is outgoing in the best way possible. He says....
“LETS GO TO THE STOCKYARDS!”
“Um....Boris....why would you want go there?
“I WANT TO PURCHASE SOME CATTLE”
At that moment, I thought to myself this guy is nuts and really wanted to be his friend!
I asked myself who wants and says that?......so of course we went and turned it into a full on adventure going to tour cattle slaughterhouses. I never found out if he really bought cattle but he did vanish to talk to some onsite representative. I didn’t even need to ask I thought it was hilarious.
Afterwards we stumble across an authentic cowboy/rodeo apparel shop. At this point I am just following Boris on his mission of going deep into the Southern culture..
He says to the sales rep who by the way is straight out of western film all decked out in everything cowboy.
“I want to buy a giant shiny cowboy belt buckle”
The cowboy senses his heavy Russian accent and says somewhat surprised in a HEAVY SOUTHERN DRAWL....
WOAH!!!!.....WHERE ARE YOU FROM.”
Boris replies in serious deadpan voice.
I AM FROM RUSSIA, AND YOU?
